Two long touchdown runs by Nate Deno and Blake Elming in the fourth quarter came far too late for the McCutcheon Mavericks on Friday night.

Playing its final Hoosier Crossroads Conference football game before moving to the North Central Conference in 2014, McCutcheon was unable to slow Hamilton Southeastern’s running game in a 42-21 loss.

Hunter Hardee rushed for two touchdowns and Tyler Janney picked up 100 yards on eight carries for the Class 6A No. 10 Royals (7-2). Four different Hamilton Southeastern players rushed for touchdowns, starting with Cameron Polk’s 20-yarder in the first quarter.

McCutcheon (3-6) closed within 21-7 in the second quarter when Aaron Phillips found Deno for a 31-yard touchdown pass. However, the Royals regained their three-touchdown lead just before halftime on Hardee’s 12-yard run.

Deno ripped off a 61-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and finished with 156 yards on 25 carries. Elming added a 77-yard touchdown run and finished with 86 yards on four carries.

The Mavericks will have two weeks to prepare for their Class 5A sectional opener at Kokomo.
