McGuire finds net twice in RHS win

For three halves in their last two games, the Richmond girls soccer team failed to find the net.

In Saturday’s shutout loss to Logansport, the Red Devils misfired on several close chances, including a penalty kick.

On Tuesday, facing Muncie Central at Lyboult Field, Richmond had several first-half near misses and the North Central Conference game went to half in a scoreless tie.

The second half was a different story. Jordan McGuire scored twice on plays that featured slick passes from Megan Bell, Julia Black and Sam Wilson, and the back-line defense made life relatively easy for Richmond goalkeeper Nikki Mittenthal in a 2-0 victory.

McGuire had three great first-half chances, the best going just wide with 20 seconds left on a deft cross by Julia Keene. She took a direct kick over the defense from Bell about 10 minutes into the second half and scored, then tallied again as Black and Wilson set her up for an easy shot.

Mittenthal denied Central’s best scoring chance with 6 minutes left and RHS improved to 3-2 in the conference and 8-4-3 overall.
The Devils visit Huntington North on Saturday in the regular-season and conference finale.
