McNamara delivers pair of goals for Bears


Taylor McNamara scored two goals, including the game winner with one second remaining, as the East Brunswick High School field hockey team rallied for a 3-2 non-conference victory.

Nikki Marzella opened the scoring midway through the half off a pass from McNamara, before McNamara made it 2-0 Bears halfway through the second period, with Meagan Costello providing the assist. Westfield got even, with Alexa Stiles scoring with 9:16 left before Colleen Kelly tied it on a penalty corner with 45 seconds remaining. Both goals were assisted by Bridget McLasker. McNamara then buried the winner off a penalty corner of her own, with Costello assisting.

Franklin 5, Koinonia 1: Kierra Copperthwaite scored two goals and Kristen Paladino added a goal and two assists to propel Franklin. Jada Foster and Ebun Osuntuyi chipped in with goals for the Warriors (8-9).

South Plainfield 2, A.L. Johnson 1: Charlotte Macchia scored twice, with Shannon Hughes and Jess Bishop providing assistance for South Plainfield (18-2).

Piscataway 3, North Plainfield 1: Freshman Imanni Reeves scored two goals – the first multi-goal game for her varsity career – and Piscataway improved to 2-16-2. Maya Gulliksen added a goal and an assist for the Chiefs, while Alisa Dickson hit for North Plainfield (0-15-1).

Boys soccer

Metuchen 2, Bishop Ahr 2: Cameron O’Connell and Ryan Josell first-half goals for Metuchen (8-9-3). Gerald Demby netted a first-half goal for Bishop Ahr (8-9-1) before Pat Hartman scored the tying goal in the 70th minute for the Trojans.

Wardlaw-Hartridge 2, J.F. Kennedy 1: Matt Nader scored a pair of goals for Wardlaw-Hartridge while Jason Carvalho scored the only Kennedy goal.

Woodbridge Academy 3, Warren Tech 0: Ali Ben- Saad converted two penalty kicks and Ruchit Patel scored off a free kick to lead Woodbridge Academy (4-11-1). Kyle Kopcho had four saves for the shutout.

Rutgers Prep 3, Franklin 2: Ezer Browne, Ali Makhdoom, and Tom Smith each scored a goal to lead Rutgers Prep (6-6-2), as Smith scored the game-winner off a cross from Zach Perez. Andrew Echeverria scored both Franklin (3-15) goals.

Girls soccer

Perth Amboy 6, Perth Amboy Tech 0: Nicole Luna had two goals and an assist and Jaquelin Ruiz and Glendoly Cepeda added a goal and an assist apiece to power Perth Amboy Tech. Tanaysia Brown made four saves for Perth Amboy Tech.

North Plainfield 3, Dunellen 0: Caitlin Gugliotta, Gabby Spencer and Dannia Ledezma scored for North Plainfield. Ashley Marshall made one save for the Canucks (7-9-1). Dunellen (4-13) got nine saves from Casey Olsommer.
