Mealey resigns as Watchung Hills coach

By

Sean Mealey, who has coached the Watchung Hills High School girls soccer team the past two seasons, had his resignation accepted by the school board Tuesday night, athletics director Scott Eveland confirmed.

Mealey, who opted not to comment on his decision to resign, left the team Thursday, two weeks into the new season. Dan Root, who served as the Warriors head coach in 2011 before becoming Mealey’s assistant the past two years, will resume head coaching duties for the rest of the season.

Mealey is also the head varsity golf coach at Watchung Hills, and has led Warriors to two consecutive NJSIAA state Group IV championships. He confirmed he will be reapplying for the position in the spring as all coaches must each year.
