Repeating as Foot Locker national champion as a senior, Cheserek is also the only prep runner in history to run sub-12:00 at New York’s legendary Van Cortlandt Park. A two-time state champion and undefeated at the prep XC level since 2010, the Oregon-bound Cheserek owns a share of eight individual and team national championships.


  • Won NJISAA Prep A 5K championship for the second time, with a course-record time of 14:42.84
  • Won the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships for the second consecutive year, becoming fourth two-time winner in event’s 34-year history
  • Won second straight Foot Locker Northeast Regional championships
  • Won the 2.5-mile Eastern States race at the Manhattan Invitational in 11:58.7, posting a sub-12:00 time for the second consecutive year
  • Won the Essex County Championship for a third year in a row, breaking his previous record on the 5K course with a time of 14:18.7
  • Won 2-mile run at New Balance Outdoor Nationals
  • Broke the oldest U.S. high school record on the books, which had stood for 49 years, in the indoor 2-mile run at the Millrose Games with a time of 8:39.15
  • Has won eight individual and team national championships in both cross country and track & field


  • Became the first high school runner to run a sub-12:00 on 2.5-mile course at Manhattan Invitational at New York’s Van Cortlandt Park in 2011
  • Set course record at New Jersey’s Holmdel Park in 2011, becoming second prep runner to clock sub-15:00 there
  • Holds national indoor record in the 5,000
  • Finished second at the Nike Cross Nationals Final in 2010, which was the last time he failed to break the tape in a prep cross country race

3.23 cumulative GPA; Cheserek moved to the U.S. from Kenya before his sophomore year and spoke very little English. He has raised his GPA significantly every year since.

“I’ve been fortunate to meet many of the great runners from my country (Kenya) and most of them have given me advice. They tell me to maintain my studies for success in the future. They give me advice and encouragement and I’m lucky.”
