Merrill's Jesperson gets all-state mention

By

As impressive as Austin Hawkins’ performance last week in the WIAA state tournament might have been, it could be considered more remarkable considering the players he did it against.

Hawkins, named Tuesday as a third-team all-state player by The Associated Press, put on perhaps his most memorable showing Saturday in the Division 4 championship game against two of the state’s best players.

The 6-foot-4 senior never shied from competition as he scored 31 points and nearly single-handedly kept Whitefish Bay Dominican from coasting to a second straight state championship.

This was the same Dominican team that on Tuesday had Marquette-committed point guard Duane Wilson named first-team all-state and 6-9 sophomore Diamond Stone named to the second team.

Hawkins was the only central Wisconsin player named to any of the four all-state teams. Five players received honroable mention. Those players are: Stevens Point freshman Trevor Anderson, Amherst senior Caleb Glennon, Merrill senior David Jesperson, Medford senior John Keefe and Almond-Bancroft junior Ethan Yonke.
