The Merritt Island Mustangs came out strong in the first half, setting an example of what their competitors can expect this upcoming season.
Nick Smith along with Andrew Bocci, T.J. Bell and Jon-El Battle led the offense to an impressive 28-7 lead at the half en rout to a 34-7 victory over Viera.
The Mustangs found their groove after being hit with two consecutive penalties in the first quarter.
“Nick’s got the heart,” Jeff McLean said. “You can see it in him.”
Smith’s dedication to his team shined through tonight as he completed 12-of-16 passes for 151 yards.
Merritt Island’s defense held strong, allowing only minimal yardage.
When asked about the upcoming season, Coach McLean stated “We have some surprises for later in the season.”
McLean hinted to some hidden abilities that the coaching staff is working on.
Turnover on downs seemed to be the common thread for both teams. Neither team was willing to give away any yardage in the third quarter. Viera’s hard hitting defense held Merritt Island, which caused a failed attempt at a 47-yard field goal.
The fourth quarter saw the junior varsity players hit the field and D.J. Hampton broke three tackles while completing an 80-yard run for the lone touchdown in the quarter,
