The Fort Myers High School football team is returning to its offensive roots this season: the Wing-T.
The results, at least in Friday’s preseason classic against visiting Lake Worth, were a blast from the Green Wave’s storied past.
Behind running backs T.J. Morgan and Terrance Moore, the Green Wave rushed for 296 yards in a 41-27 win that wasn’t as close as the final score.
Fort Myers led 28-0 at halftime, helped by two return touchdowns, including a 88-yard burst by Morgan on the game’s opening kickoff.
The Trojans, who finished 1-9 in 2012, had a forgettable first half, generating just three first downs (two on Green Wave penalties) and two total yards on 28 offensive plays.
The humid conditions, coupled with a lack of practice time due to inclement weather, took a physical toll on Fort Myers in the second half. A handful of starters, including three in the defensive secondary, left the game with leg cramps or minor injuries.
That contributed to a second-half surge by Lake Worth, who racked up 232 total yards, 181 through the air, in the final two quarters.
“We were outside two hours the whole week and that’s only because we practiced at 5 a.m. Tuesday,” Green Wave coach Sam Sirianni Jr. said. “We’re just not in the shape we need to be in right now but that’s everybody.”
The lack of available personnel also grounded the Fort Myers offense, which saw junior quarterback Dylan DeGroot throw just eight passes. He completed three for 51 yards, including a 29-yard scoring toss to senior Giftson Bornelus.
“Our offense needs to be more balanced,” Sirianni said. “We struggled with our receiver/defensive back depth and we couldn’t go to our four-receiver set.”
A holding penalty called back what would have been a 33-yard touchdown pass by DeGroot and the junior also misfired on what could have been another long scoring toss.
“We had the chance for three big ones in the Wing and that’s when you throw out of that, you can hit some long ones,” Sirianni said.
“But this one doesn’t count. We’ve got Aug. 30 circled on the calendar and we’ll be ready to go.”
