Badminton Player of the Year

Kiyoko Hashimoto

School: Phoenix Mountain Pointe.

Class: Senior.

Season recap: Hashimoto finished a perfect 16-0 in the regular season in dual-meet matches, and finished 28-0 on the season, winning the singles championship at the Chaparral Invitational in September and last month winning the Division I singles championship against teammate Vaishnavi Koka. Hashimoto and Koka also teamed up to finish 29-0 in doubles play this season, winning the doubles title at the Independence Invitational in September. Hashimoto finished her final three years at Mountain Pointe undefeated in singles and doubles in regular-season play.

Coach Larry Holmes’ comments: “(Hashimoto) is a coach’s dream to have. She is very talented, works hard. Nothing seems too big for her. She’s selfless and giving. It has truly been an honor to coach her. She helped elevate our program to be one of the elite programs in the state.”

Hashimoto’s comments: “It was an interesting year adjusting to a new coach, but it was a good experience. Playing in the final was hard with my teammate on the other side, because we’ve been best friends for a long time. I plan on attending a community college, but I’m condfident I’ll keep playing badminton. It’s not just a school sport to me, it’s something I like to do.”
