The Mary Persons Golf teams are making their last preparations for the state championship tournament on Monday.
Under the leadership of head coach Ronnie Shipman, the boys and girls teams have a shot of winning the 4A state championship.
With only 2 senior boys and one girl, the squads are relatively young. For the first time in school history, both won region titles in the same season. Junior Dalton Johnson who was the low ball medalist in Region play, is helping improve the Bulldogs chances of bringing home a title.
Johnson adds, “I hope we win state. I think we both have a really good chance, girls and boys. We have some really good players, hopefully we’ll do good.”
“I got this program about 3 years ago and this is the first time the boys and girls do it together”, says Shipman. “We had the girls go to state a couple years and then later the boys. This is the first time I’ve gotten to take them both. This is something they set their mind to do and they did it so it means alot.”
The Girls play Nob North while the boys play Dalton Country Club in north Georgia. Practice rounds and the banquet are on Sunday. Tournament action begins on Monday morning.
