MTCS Cougars cruise to 3-0 start

Middle Tennessee Christian School spoiled Mt. Juliet Christian Academy’s home opener with a 48-17 victory Friday night in a non-district game.

The Cougars reeled off a 3-0 start for the first time since 2008.

MTCS started the scoring on a Tanner Green 2-yard run.

“He’s only a sophomore. He’s got a tremendous upside to him. He runs hard”, said MTCS coach Brian Stewart of Green. “I can’t say enough good things (about him).”

Green, though, diverted the spotlight away from him after this game.

“Our linemen made great big holes and I just ran through them,” he said.

After Green’s score, a turnover on downs for MJCA set up a Justin Winn 47-yard pass to Trey Hickey. Winn managed to score, as well, running one yard for a TD. Kavvan Hill’s extra point attempt, however, was no good.

Other scoring included a 10-yard TD run by Nick Merritt, followed by a successful two-point conversion by the Cougars.

After the game, Stewart was also beaming about Merritt.

“Merritt had some great runs for us, as well,” Stewart said. “It’s nice when we have a host of backs that we can run out there.”

At halftime, MJCA (1-1) had 17 points and then went scoreless in the second half. MTCS tacked on two more TDs after the break.

“That’s a pride factor,” Stewart said of his defense. “We gave up 17 points in the first, (and I told them) ‘Now can you go out there and throw a shutout?’ We bend and bend, but we didn’t break.”
