The game plan for the J.F. Kennedy High School football team was simple — create turnovers and give the ball to running back, Anthony Roberts.

They did just that in a 44-6 rout over Perth Amboy Friday night at Water Stadium.

Roberts shouldered the majority of the Mustang offense, carrying the ball 17 times for 195 yards and two scores, including a 56-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter and a five-yard touchdown run midway through the third.

“We just did what we had to do,” Roberts said. “The line blocked the way they were supposed to do. It’s the way we practiced all week.”

Mustangs coach, Andrew Maurizio spoke highly of Roberts and was impressed with his running back’s performance.

“Every day I say to him, ‘Is this going to be the day that gets you a scholarship,’ ‘” Maurizio said. “He really is running with a purpose and he has a true desire to play at the next level, and to prove himself to earn a scholarship. The offensive line just does a tremendous job of taking pride in getting that job done.”

Defensively, the Mustangs managed to create eight turnovers, which included two turnover-on-downs, a safety three minutes into the first quarter, and five interceptions by Kennedy’s secondary.

“These kids were real prepared this week,” defensive coordinator Joe Riggi said. “They were excited to play. They knew they (Perth Amboy) were going to throw the ball, so the secondary was just waiting for a game like this to happen and they just stepped up and had a great game.”

The Mustangs are now 3-3, with Woodbridge next on the schedule.

Maurizio feels this upcoming week is a statement game for his team.

“It’s about a change of perception. People have a perception about Kennedy that we don’t like,” Maurizio said. “As a former Kennedy player, it always gave me a bad taste in my mouth, and these kids are sick and tired of hearing that we are not that good. This week we are going to have a purpose in mind of changing that perception of Kennedy football.”
