Naples host Centerville in match-up of state powers

By

For the first time in six years Naples will host an out-of-state opponent at Pete Staver Field Saturday Sept. 28, the opponent is Ohio prep power Centerville.
Centerville plays in Ohio’s largest classification and has earned a berth in the playoffs seven of the past nine seasons. Naples owns two state titles since 2001 to go along with five regional titles.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for our guys, we take the responsibility very seriously,” Naples coach Bill Kramer said. “We know that we’re representing not just Naples but all of Southwest Florida and the state for that matter.”
Several months removed from a 48-33 Class 6A state semifinal loss to state champion Miami Central Kramer feels there’s a reason he got the call for a matchup with Centerville instead of the 6A champion Rockets.
“We know that they didn’t call Miami Central, they called us,” Kramer said. “And they reason they didn’t call Miami Central is because they don’t want to get smoked. And the reason they called us is because they think they can beat us.”
Kramer was quick to admit his team has to make a lot of improvements prior to the Sept. 28 match-up. He’s without News-Press All-Area Player of the Year Manny Morgan who is headed to Akron. And he will be coaching his smallest senior class ever at Naples with seven total seniors.
“I think you can look at our roster and see how young we are,” Kramer said. “But that’s okay that’s typical for us we’re going to have a big turnover. The difference is normally we have big senior classes this year we do not. It’s the smallest senior class we’ve ever had.”
Greenwich (Conn.) made the trip to Naples Nov. 9 2006, week 10 of the season, while the Centerville game is scheduled for week five. There is no particular reason for the different date for this game according to Kramer, it was just the way the schedules were aligned.
The Saturday Sept. 28 date is tentative as the schools have reached out to ESPN to televise the game nationally, Kramer said they expect to have a decision from ESPN officials in May or June.
Naples will provide Centerville with 35 percent of the gate after expenses.
