A grind-it-out drive and a monster run to start the second half helped Naples put away Hialeah on Friday night at Staver Field.
Big plays marked the first half.
Quarterback Michael Walker floated a pass to wide receiver Tyler Byrd for a 31-yard touchdown on the Golden Eagles’ opening drive.
Hialeah responded on their next drive when Henry Bussey broke off a 65-yard touchdown run.
Another big run, this time 56 yards by running back Carlin Fils-Aime, would give Naples a lead it never relinquished as the Golden Eagles went into the half up 20-14.
Naples started the second half with an 11-play, 80-yard drive, topped off by a 4-yard run by Max Joseph for a touchdown.
But it was an 87-yard touchdown run by quarterback Michael Walker on the next drive that broke Hialeah’s spirit and made Naples coach Bill Kramer smile.
“He dropped back and saw the route was busted and took off. He’s quick on his feet and with his mind,” said Kramer.
Walker is running the offense, while starter Garrett Zech recovers from a broken jaw.
He was happy with his 213 yards rushing but said, “I just want us to be the best team we can and do what I can to help out until Garrett gets back.”
For Kramer, the win came down to one thing
“We played with no fear,” he said.
