Gatorade Player of the Year

National POY Watch: Sony Michel

From many, there will be one. And while there’s still no guarantee contending athletes will win their own state at this point in the season, a number of elite performers are making a case for Gatorade National Football Player of the Year consideration. Here’s the scoop on the latest top candidate.

Sony Michel
Senior running back, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)

Greatness Present: His parents couldn’t have picked a better name for him than Sony, because he’s straight out of a PlayStation game.

Take Michel’s 84-yard touchdown run against Miami Jackson last week as Exhibit A — a 14-second, weaving cross-field blend of speed and agility that few, if any, in the Class of 2014 could match.

Through seven games, Michel has rushed for 661 yards and nine touchdowns on 102 carries, leading the Patriots to a 6-1 start. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound five-star running back has also hauled in four receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Greatness Past: A 2012 Class 5A First Team All-State selection as a junior, Michel rushed for 1,264 yards and 18 scores on 130 carries last season, leading American Heritage to a 9-2 record.

He’s been somewhat of a Florida football legend since his days dominating youth gridirons, culminating in an epic performance in the 2010 Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl as an eighth-grader.

Greatness Future: Michel has verbally committed to Georgia.

Make no mistake: The Gatorade State Football Player of the Year races aren’t over, and the National POY race is now heating up. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list.Check back for daily updates on the top contenders making their case.
