THE WINNER: Madi Unzicker
School: Millard South (Omaha, Neb.)
Athletic achievement: She led the Patriots (29-5) to the Class A state championship this past season. Unzicker hit .536 with 12 home runs, 42 RBI and 50 runs scored. Captain of the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska Team, she was also a member of the Lincoln Journal Star Super-State Team. Unzicker matched the Class A record for career home runs with 25.
Academic excellence: Unzicker has maintained a 3.92 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of a homeless shelter, the American Red Cross and youth softball programs.
“There are no weaknesses in her swing, and she is a great power hitter,” said Mark Watt, head coach at Lincoln Southwest (Lincoln, Neb.). “Defensively, she’s very, very good, and her arm is strong enough that you just don’t want to try to steal against her.”
THE FUTURE: Unzicker will be a senior next year.
