It wasn’t as easy as the final score indicated but the Neenah boys’ tennis team will take it.
The 6-1 win by the Rockets over Madison West in the quarterfinals of the WIAA Division 1 team tennis tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Friday sent Neenah into today’s semifinals.
The fifth-ranked Rockets will face Arrowhead at 9 a.m. in one semifinal. Sixth-ranked Arrowhead defeated Waukesha West 4-3.
“We’ve played them (Arrowhead) twice,” Neenah’s Matt Brooks said. “At one doubles, we’ve beat them twice. It’s always tough to beat someone three times.”
But that doesn’t mean the Rockets are not confident about making it through the semifinals.
“We’re all really excited,” Brooks’ doubles partner Andrew Juneau said. “Six of us seniors have been looking forward to this our whole career.”
Neenah swept the three doubles matches, with John Price and Tylor Rosera having the most convincing win, a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Allen Yen and Jamie McDowell at No. 2 doubles.
Brooks and Juneau won a highly contested match 6-4, 6-3 over Timo Bentolila and Will Simonson at No. 1 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Alec Becker and Alan Desai defeated Miles Morgan and Matt Munns 6-4, 6-3 in another tough match.
“We didn’t know very much about them,” said Juneau about the Regents. “Our match, we started out a little shaky. We were all a little nervous. We just wanted to perform.”
What made Bentolila and Simonson tough?
“They came ready and they wanted it,” Brooks said. “Their serves were on.”
At No. 1 singles, Ryan Risgaard had to battle to defeat the Regents’ Jonathon Glasgow, winning 7-5, 6-4. Will Weyenberg and Michael Mauthe had easier times at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, defeating Marucs Van Ginkel 6-2, 6-4 and Alex Lee 6-1, 6-1, respectively.
In the other quarterfinal matches, second-ranked Brookfield East shut out Wausau East 7-0, while top-ranked Marquette University blanked eighth-ranked Eau Claire Memorial 7-0.
