THE WINNER: Ashlie Blake
School: Liberty (Henderson, Nev.)
Athletic achievement: She won two individual state championships this spring and led the Patriots to a 13th-place finish as a team. Blake won the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 7.75 inches and hurled the discus 154-5, winning both events for a second straight year. Blake’s personal bests this year in the shot put (51-3.5) and discus (157-0) ranked as the nation’s No. 4 and No. 17 performances respectively among prep competitors in 2013 at the time of her selection.
Academic excellence: Blake has maintained a weighted 3.36 GPA.
Exemplary character: The manager of the Liberty High football team, she has volunteered locally with the Special Olympics and as a peer mentor with her school’s Best Buddies Club.
“Ashlie Blake strives to be one of the best track and field athletes in the nation,” said Gloria Allgood, coach of Sunrise Mountain (Las Vegas, Nev.). “Her athletic talents are exceptional. I know that she will have a great future in the throws in college and at the elite level.”
THE FUTURE: Blake will be a senior next year.
