New football rankings: Valley's 88-point outburst opens eyes

By

West Des Moines Valley coach Gary Swenson always aims to have his team playing its best at the end of the season.
After his team crushed Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 88-0, it’s obvious the Tigers are charging in that direction.
The 88 points was the highest total scored by a Class 4-A team since 1969, when a Jerry Moses-led Waterloo East squad humbled Newton 98-6 on Sept. 12, 1969.
Thomas Jefferson (1-7) fell behind 67-0 at halftime. Valley’s Tyus Mason scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and the Tigers were off and galloping.
The victory helped push Valley into No. 6 in this week’s Des Moines Sunday Register football rankings. The No. 1 teams remained unchanged: 4-A West Des Moines Dowling Catholic, 3-A Sioux City Heelan, 2-A Waukon, 1-A Iowa City Regina, Class A BGM of Brooklyn and eight-player Exira-EHK.
It was a big offensive night by quite a few team, not just Valley. Class 3-A Washington beat Fort Madison 79-8, 1-A Dike-New Hartford beat West Fork of Sheffield 85-6 and five eight-player teams put 70 or more points on the scoreboard.
