THE WINNER: Bryce Alford
School: La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.)
Position: Point guard
Weight: 175 pounds
Athletic achievement: The son of New Mexico coach Steve Alford averaged 37.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.6 steals this past season, leading the Bears (22-6) to the Class 5A quarterfinals. The 2012 New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame Male High School Athlete of the Year, Alford broke a 50-year-old single-season scoring record, finishing the year with 1,050 points.
Academic excellence: Alford has maintained a 3.47 GPA.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, the Ronald McDonald House Charities and as a youth basketball coach.
“Bryce Alford is the best player I have seen in New Mexico in the last 40 years and possibly ever,” said Marty Saiz, president of the Danny Granger AAU club. “He is the player I would want to take the last shot, which he did numerous times this year to help his team win. His confidence and fun-loving demeanor are qualities that make him a great leader on and off the court.”
THE FUTURE: Alford has signed with New Mexico.
