THE WINNER: Jasmine Casados
School: La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.)
Athletic achievement: She led the Bears (16-9) to the Class 5A state tournament this past season. Casados posted a .500 batting average with 16 home runs, 43 runs scored and 48 RBI. The Albuquerque Journal Player of the Year and a three-time All-Metro selection, she concluded her prep career with a state-record 47 home runs.
Academic excellence: Casados has maintained a 3.67 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
“Casados is a fantastic player,” said Mark Ryan, head coach at Eldorado (Albuquerque, N.M.). “She’s very dangerous with the bat, she’s a great fielder and she’s a very good base runner too. She’s got a very good, very quick swing and the ball jumps off her bat.”
THE FUTURE: Casados has signed with New Mexico.
