New Site coach Byron Sparks was happy his team won Friday but he wasn’t as happy about the way it won.
“They beat us on the boards and got majority of loose balls,” he said. “If we want to win a state championship we got to win those battles.”
Behind sophomore Grace Elliott the Lady Royals held off Amite County 71-59 to advance to the Class 2A state championship game for the fourth consecutive year.
New Site (31-4), the defending 2A state champs, will play today’s winner Potts Camp-Scott Central winner for the 2A title on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Elliott, a 6-foot forward, came off the bench and led New Site with 17 points. Cristin Pharr and Shelby Stricklin each added 15 points for the Lady Royals, while Christy Clark chipped in 12 points for New Site, ranked No. 1 in 2A.
“Grace was big tonight like she has been all year for us,” Sparks said. “But we have got to play much better on the defensive end of the floor.”
BreAshlee Jones led Amite County (23-10) with a game-high 19 points. Destiny Williams had 13 points for the Lady Trojans, who started an eighth grader, two freshmen and two sophomores.
“Their defense put a hurting on us early,” Amite County coach Marcus Flippin said. “But I am proud of my girls for fighting and we will be back.”
