Class C, Division III
LAST SEASON: 4-5
Newark Valley sees turnover at the quarterback position with junior Vinny Darpino taking over. “We have very high hopes for Vinny,” coach Brian Sherwood said. “He’s an option quarterback with a strong arm.”
Darpino will run the veer offense, featuring a sprint package with running back Larry Kasmarcik shouldering the load in the backfield. Casmarick is in his third year with the team, having led it in rushing yards and touchdowns last year.
The offensive line is a younger unit in terms of experience. Justin Lovejoy is the veteran of the group, a senior manning the center spot. The guards, sophomore Shawn Potter and senior Greg McMullin are battling at left guard with Troy Teweerbaugh at right guard. The tackles are raw with Shayne Parker on the left and Troy Primus on the right, both starting for the first time.
The defense will play a 5-3 scheme in an attempt to plug the run. On the line, Blake Novi and Kasmarcik are on the ends with Primus and Conner Coleman lining at tackle. At the nose, Lovejoy continues his work in the trenches.
Behind the line are Tom Dunnett, Darpino and third-year starter Trevor Hoffmier at the strong side, weak side and middle linebacker positions. In the secondary, Aaron Baylor and Nick Schermerhorn are the starting cornerbacks with Brett Kunze patrolling as the lone safety.
If Newark Valley makes the playoffs, it will mark the fourth appearance in six years.
