Casey Manzanero scored 14 points to lead the Unatego girls basketball team to a 48-44 victory over Newfield in the Section 4 Class C semifinals on Tuesday.
Erica Carney scored 12 points for the Trojans, whose season ends at 14-6. Unatego (17-3) will play the winner of the other semifinal, between top-seeded Elmira Notre Dame and sixth seed Harpursville, in the Class final, slated for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.
The Notre Dame-Harpursville game was postponed on Tuesday due to weather concerns, and will be played at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Elmira.
Seniors Lindsey Wood and Kierstin Sinn added seven points apiece Tuesday for the Trojans, who trailed by two points at halftime and briefly took the lead in the third quarter. But it came down to making shots at the end of the game, according to Newfield coach Gary Emerson, and the host Spartans were able to do it.
“We just missed some shots at the end and they made them,” he said. “Then we had to foul, and we just ran out of time.”
Emerson said his players, including six seniors, should be proud.
“I thought it was a very good season, and it was great to make it to Section 4 semifinals in Class C,” he said. “Our upset of Lansing (47-35 last Friday in the quarterfinals) was really a feather in our cap. As I told the girls, it hurts right now, but they have a lot to be proud of.”
