Nichols Returns Talented Seniors

By

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.- Colin Brinson has a lot of confidence in his senior captains heading into 2013. Those players were part of a successful winning season in 2012. Nichols ended the year with a 6-3 overall record but there are still some questions heading into this season.

“We have a lot of good talent returning that’s played well over the past couple of years it’s just a matter of depth coming through for us. We have two excellent captains in Mike Geiger who’s a halfback and linebacker, and an offensive tackle and nose guard in Andy Welchoff who had an excellent end to his year last year. Those are two guys who are really, really important for us coming back,” Colin Brinson told Two on Your Side’s Stu Boyar at the Lions Ad-Pro All Star Game.

This season, Nichols has five returning starters on offense and six on defense. Given the numbers, one might predict the defense would be stronger. However, right now Coach Brinson thinks the defense needs more time to develop.

“On offense I think we might be better because defense needs so much depth. With our number of players, we have a very good front 11 but just the numbers when it comes down to special teams and defenses can wear down over time. That’s one of my major concerns even though I love the players that we have out there,” Coach Brinson said.

When taking a closer look at the schedule, Coach Brinson was excited about the opponents he saw for 2013. “We’re predominantly playing Class D schools of the single D’s. It’s a very strong division down there and it’s a real upgrade in our schedule. We play O’Hara also so it’s pretty tough and it’s often who you play. We’ve got some very difficult games coming at us from Class D,” Coach Brinson explained.

Most rivalry games on the schedule come from teams close to each other. But Coach Brinson points out, Nichols’s rival isn’t from around here. “We play Charles Finney which is a private school in Penfield, NY, just outside of Rochester. They’re our homecoming this year and we were their homecoming last year so it’s a good rivalry and it’s fun,” Coach Brinson said.

Nichols opens up the 2013 season against Cardinal O’Hara on September 7th at noon.
