The wild card entries for the New York state wrestling championships on Feb. 22-23 at the Times Union Center in Albany were released on Friday, with nine wrestlers from Section 1 receiving at-large bids.
Eight wrestlers were selected to compete in the Division 1 (large schools) tournament along with the 15 champions from Section 1. Clarkstown North’s Colby Kash (138 pounds), Ketcham’s Brad Marvin (145), Horace Greeley’s Scott Wymbs (195), Yorktown’s David Varian (285), Ossining’s Alex Delacruz (120) and Trent Lofaro (220), and North Rockland’s Blaise Benderoth (120) and Jake DiMarsico (132) will be added to the fields in their respective weight classes.
In Division 2 (small schools), Section 1 only received one at-large wild card bid who will travel to Albany with the rest of the section champs. Nanuet senior Anthony Calvano (120) will compete in the state tournament for the fifth time in his career.
At-large selections are automatically entered into the state tournaments, but there are also alternates selected in the event that any wrestlers drop out. Byram Hills’ Jon Errico (106) is a first alternate in Division 1, while Edgemont’s Tyler Aslanian (106), Nanuet’s Joe Dillon (126) and Putnam Valley’s Kyle Kelvas (138) are each second alternates in Division 2.
