The Mayville softball team scored in every inning but the fourth to jump out to an early lead against Port Washington, and never had to look back.

The Cardinals scored two runs in the first, third and fifth inning and got consistent hitting throughout the entire lineup.

“We really spread it around,” Mayville head coach Jack Hurst said. “We got probably five or six girls that had two hits for us.”

The Cardinals also got a strong performance out of Paige Giese. She threw five shutout innings until she got tired.

“I think she got tired or overheated in the sixth, so we had to taker her out,” Hurst said. “I’m not sure if she didnt’ have enough water, but we’ll have to watch that from now on moving forward.”

Giese tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out four.

Port Washington scored its only runs in that sixth inning.

The head didn’t get to Giese at the plate, as she recorded a double and an RBI while Haylee Arroyo went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Libby Schellpfeffer homered for the Cardinals along with a double, while DD Weinberger and Alyssa Frane both recorded multi-hit games.

On Thursday Mayville hosts No. 3 Grafton, which defeated Kewaskum 8-1.
