The Central boys basketball team traveled to Guerin Catholic on Saturday with a perfect 4-0 record after senior Tyler Arens hit a buzzer beater the night before to beat Kokomo in overtime.
The Bearcats returned with a blemish on their record as Class 3A No. 3 Guerin Catholic seized control from the opening tip and prevented any last-second magic this time around.
The Golden Eagles put Central in a 10-point hole at the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 66-41 victory.
Guerin Catholic (5-0) effectively stopped the Bearcats with its zone defense. Central shot just 6-of-22 from 3-point range and only 14-of-47 from the field (29.8 percent)
Only two Bearcats scored in double figures. Arens netted 13 and Phillip Corthen scored 11. Arens led the Bearcats in rebounds, too, with seven. Guerin Catholic held their second leading scorer on the season, Marcus Dukes, to only two points.
The Golden Eagles turned their defensive stops into transition points. The Guerin Catholic tandem of Aaron Brennan, an IUPUI commit, and Matt Holba shared game-high honors with 23 points each.
The Bearcats (4-1) return to action Saturday when they travel to Delta for their final game before a two-week holiday break.
