No. 9 Jackson Memorial shines without its star

For the Jackson Memorial girls basketball team, No. 9 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10, Friday’s Shore Conference Class A South contest at Southern was a good test to see how it would react without its best player, Hannah Missry

It wasn’t pretty, but the Jaguars showed they are more than just one player.

Senior guard Stephanie Mason hit three 3-pointers and scored 10 of her 13 points after halftime as the Jaguars got by the Rams, 36-25.

Morgan Williams added 13 points for Jackson Memorial, which won its 39th consecutive divisional game.

Missry, a Fordham recruit and the Shore Conference leader in 3-pointers last season as a junior, was injured in the fourth quarter of the WOBM Christmas Classic third-place game on Sunday. What was initially feared to be as a serious injury was diagnosed as a sprained ligament between her right foot and ankle after X-rays came back negative on Monday.

The hope was that Missry could play Friday, but the foot was still tender on Friday afternoon and the decision was made to sit. The Jaguars are back in action on Monday at home against Toms River North.

FREEHOLD 58, FREEHOLD TWP. 36: Sophomore Rebecca Cobb scored eight of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Colonials (6-1) past the Patriots (3-5) in a nondivisional game.

For Freehold Township, sophomore guard Samantha Famulare finished with a team-high 10 points.

Sophomore guard Marina Mabrey added 15 points, six rebounds, two blocks, two steals and one assist. Flaherty scored eight and Chloe Johnson added five in a 20-4 first quarter.

Mabrey netted 11 first-half points, nine in the second quarter. Johnson grabbed six rebounds.
