THE WINNER: Jatarie White

School: Providence Day School (Charlotte, N.C.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Forward
Height: 6-foot-3

Athletic achievement: She led the Chargers to a 27-4 record and their eighth North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 3A state championship in nine seasons. A three-time NCISAA Class 3A All-State selection, White averaged 19.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 1.8 steals per game. White recorded 24 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in a 44-28, title-clinching victory against Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School (Rabun Gap, Ga.). She participated in the 2012 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship Team Trials this past summer.

Academic excellence: White has maintained a B average.

Exemplary character: An active member of her school’s Cultural Alliance Club, she has volunteered locally at a retirement facility and Charlotte’s Second Harvest Food Bank.

“Jatarie is the reason her team has won so many games,” said Deb Savino, head coach of rival Charlotte Latin School (Charlotte, N.C.). “When it was close, she would make the difference in the game to pull out the win. Her presence in the paint offensively and defensively is unmatched in the state.”

THE FUTURE: White will be a senior next year.
