Already in possession of the District 1-3A title, the North DeSoto Lady Griffins are in playoff mode and that was evident on Tuesday night in their 17-0 win over league foe Bossier at Rusheon Middle School.
Coach Lori McFerren’s club came out of the gates fast, scoring eight runs in the top of the first, coasted through the second and third innings, before putting up a six-spot in the fourth to finish off the run-rule-shortened contest just seconds before rain doused the field.
“This is a young team with mostly freshmen and sophomores, but they’ve been hitting the ball well,” said McFerren, who passed out district championship T-shirts following the contest. “Since they are young, I’ve been letting them play pretty loose, but with the playoffs coming, I’ll be putting the hammer down.”
Junior pitcher Chasity Baker was solid on the mound for North DeSoto (16-7, 4-0), giving up just one hit, but that was a line shot by Lady Bearkat senior Bre Williams. Baker walked two and struck out three since moving over from Joaquin, Texas, during the summer.
“It’s been amazing. My old school wasn’t like this. This is a whole lot better ball team,” Baker said. “They’re more skilled and they know what they’re doing.”
Destiny Morris, Angie Nguyne and Williams made some nice defensive plays for Bossier to string the game out to four innings. The Lady Bearkats put several balls in play, but North DeSoto played error-free ball.
“When we play good defense we have a good chance to win, and we want to make a run in the playoffs,” McFerren said. “We’re in playoff mode right now and we have four tough (non-district) games coming up.”
North DeSoto plays at District 1-5A leader Parkway on Thursday, Florien, the top rated team in Class B, on Monday, Southwood on Tuesday and Airline on Wednesday.
Walters opened the game with a bunt single, followed by free passes from Emily Henderson, Katie May and Maddie Burchell. Hailey Compton reached on an error and Harlee Compton walked, setting the stage for a 2-RBI double from Katelynn Chandler. Baker knocked in another run with a single and Bre Rambin’s sacrifice made it 8-0 North DeSoto.
May led off the second inning with a double, then moved to third and scored on consecutive sacrifices by Burchell and Compton. Baker started the third with a one-out double, followed by a Rambin walk and a bloop single by Walters. An error by the Bossier infield allowed Baker to score and May’s sacrifice fly scored Rambin for an 11-0 lead.
Two Lady Bearkat errors, along with North DeSoto hits by Harleigh Callens, Walters and Henderson, contributed to a 6-run inning to close out the Lady Griffins’ win.
