On senior night, the North Fond du Lac girls basketball team found out how bright its future is.
The three seniors provided the energy and the muscle for the Orioles, while a pair of sophomores sparked the hosts to a 54-47 win against Mayville.
“It was a really good way to end our home (regular season) career, and a good way to start out our postseason,” said North Fondy senior forward Sierra Giebel.
“Just having our team come out and support us was really great,” she said about playing on senior night.
Giebel grabbed 12 rebounds while Nicole Seidl scored 17 points and eight rebounds. North Fondy coach Gary Kuehl said the other senior, Brianna Taylor, was solid in the post, even without the big numbers.
A senior on the Mayville side matched Giebel and Seidl. Kate Bemis scored 27 points and single-handedly, at times, kept the short-handed Cardinals in the game.
“She didn’t force too many shots. She took shots she knew she could make,” said Mayville coach Aaron Lehner. “She played really well tonight.”
Mattie Klingenmeyer scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Cardinals (6-13, 2-10).
What swung the balance in North Fondy’s favor was the second-half play of sophomore guards Brooke Scott and Sara Logterman. They both hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second half and combined for 13 of the team’s 21 points in the third quarter as the Orioles (14-6, 9-4) took a sizable lead.
Scott finished with 14 points on the night.
“They are a great successor for us,” Giebel said, looking to the future. “When Nicole and I leave they’re going to be the ones taking over. I have complete confidence in them, and they’re really great players when they get older.”
But there’s still plenty of time to think about the next two years, the Orioles are looking to the next three or four weeks. Kuehl said games at Markesan and Springs next week will be big tests as his squad prepares for the tournament.
“I think we’ve been peaking. We’ve won 10 of our last 12. We’ve played well at home,” he said. “I think with those [Markesan and Springs] games we’ll definitely see where we’re at.”
