The last time the North Fort Myers Red Knights won a game was on Sept. 9, 2011, with 21-20 victory at Mariner. After 19 straight losses, the Red Knights ended the winless drought with a 31-12 defeat of Lehigh in Friday’s spring classic.
Although it was a spring game, North’s varsity team was pumped up from the moment it took the field in the second quarter. The junior varsity squad played the first quarter and finished with a 7-0 lead.
North rising senior Brandon Makar completed his first eight passes and went 9-for-10 for 150 yards and three touchdowns in three quarters.
“He did what we expected him to do,” North coach Brian Makar said of his son. “We have some seniors this year that have paid a big price over the last couple of years. They’re hungry and they’re working hard to make it all happen this year.”
North effectively established a run game as backs Dylan Czeerwinski, Ricky Noel, David Vogel and Makar combined for 232 rushing yards.
Lehigh had a couple bright spots after falling behind 21-0. The Lightning put together a five play, 80-yard drive that saw rising sophomore Malik Douglas take a pass from quarterback Matt Yzaguirre 47 yards for a score on a bubble screen.
“We were good at times and pretty poor at times. We’re a young team,” Lehigh coach Nate Sund said of his 49-man roster with 40 underclassmen. “We’re going to fix a lot of this stuff. This is probably 80 percent of the team’s first varsity game. Not to take anything away from North. Coach Makar did a heck of a job.”
