Every kicker wants a chance at that game-winner, and North Fort Myers’ Connor Black got it. His extra point boot with zeros on the clock clinched a 21-20 win, spoiling Dunbar’s Senior Night on Friday.
It was a fun finish to a fun game for the Red Knights (3-6, 3-3 in 5A-14), who have nothing to play for but fun at this point in the season. With the playoff picture long gone and a running-clock loss to Lemon Bay last week, North needed something to get excited about.
“That was our motto this week,” Makar said. “We had nothing to play for but pride. Our playoffs are done, winning record is done. Let’s have some fun and play football.”
Dunbar (5-4, 4-2) had no seeding to play for, either. They already clinched the runner-up spot in the district last week.
The winning point came at the end of a 20-play 86-yard drive full of short rushes and a couple of short passes. There were also 4 fourth-down conversions, including the Tucker Sheridan’s 3-yard touchdown run. After the Knights failed to plug through the Dunbar goalline stand, Sheridan ran around the right defensive end, scoring as time expired.
The Knights finish the 2013 season next Friday, hosting Bishop Verot for Senior Night. The Tigers have one more regular season game at Fort Myers next week before the playoffs.
