Despite holding the ball on offense for nearly 18 more minutes than its opponent, the North Plainfield High School football team was foiled by a combination of A.L. Johnson’s big-play ability and its own costly mistakes as the Canucks bowed to the Crusaders, 34-21, in Mid-State 38 Raritan Division action Saturday night in Clark.
The Canucks (0-1) dug themselves too deep a hole to climb out of in the early stages of the game. The Crusaders scored 27 unanswered points to open the contest, and it wasn’t until the 6:15 mark of the third quarter that North Plainfield was able to respond.
A quartet of Johnson running backs ran 39 times for 290 yards and four touchdowns, while North Plainfield’s ground game pounded out just 143 yards on 41 attempts for one score.
Canucks’ senior quarterback Kyle Grant had a mixed performance, completing 7 of 16 passes for 179 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Junior running back Glenn Benson has the most fortuitous night of a bevy of North ball carriers, picking up 64 yards on the ground on 13 carries.
North Plainfield will look to right the ship when it plays host to Roselle, 7 p.m. Friday at its Krausche Field.
