Columbia Academy boys basketball coach Ron Harris has been dismissed after compiling a 55-27 record over three seasons and leading the Class A program to a No. 1 Associated Press ranking earlier this year.
“We appreciate Coach Harris and thank him for his dedicated efforts in leading our basketball program over the course of the last three years,” athletics director Mike Mizer said. “We are confident that a new leader in this role will continue in these efforts and benefit our basketball program.”
Columbia Academy went 21-5 this season, finishing third in District 11-A and losing in the district tournament quarterfinals. Class A tournament participants Mt. Pleasant and Richland finished ahead of Columbia Academy in 11-A during the regular season.
Spring Hill hire: Former Marshall County football coach Tom Turchetta has been named to replace Jason Scharsch at Spring Hill.
Turchetta, 64, spent three seasons as defensive coordinator at Columbia prior to taking over the Marshall County program in 2010. He was fired last summer and served as defensive coordinator at Mt. Juliet this past season.
“It’s always been a program with a lot of athletes, but for whatever reason, they haven’t been very successful,” Turchetta said of Spring Hill, which plays in District 12-AA along with Marshall County. “Some things have got to change. We’ve got to take a different approach and find a way to become more disciplined.”
Turchetta, a longtime college assistant, led Marshall County to a 13-11 record and a pair of Class 4A playoff appearances, including a quarterfinal berth in 2011.
On TV: The Riverdale girls basketball state championship victory over Science Hill will be broadcast Saturday at noon on WNPT-8. The game was not shown live because of technical difficulties.
