Junior Travis Focht carded a career-best 79 (37-42) at Detwiler on Thursday to qualify to districts as Oak Harbor’s boys golf team shot a season-best 348 to finish seventh.
“I was trying to go out there and give myself a chance all day,” Focht said. “I knew I’d have to be in the 70s to have a chance. I tried to have fun and play to my ability. I knew I had to play calm and keep it out of trouble. I wanted to play it safe to where I was 100 to 150 yards out. Where I could get a wedge to the green.
“I hit 10 greens. I said (Wednesday) night I wanted to hit 12 and avoid big numbers. I took a double bogey and came back with a par.”
Focht had one birdie.
“I took a driver and pulled it,” he said. “I thought it was out of bounds so I hit a provisional and pulled that, too. I found my first ball and laid it up for a sand wedge and made the putt.”
Focht was nowhere near advancing from sectionals last season. He had 24 putts despite hitting seven of nine greens at an event early in the current campaign.
“I was way above 90,” he said. “To break 80 this year was pretty unreal. I’m not going to lie. I made some adjustments to my seeing and putting was the real thing all season. I didn’t putt well to start and I said if I can get my putting going I can shoot better scores and improve. The last three weeks it’s improved the most.”
Focht had 34 putts and three three-putts Thursday. His wedge game was a strong point all season.
Andy Rathbun shot an 88 and Ryan Pavlica an 89 for the Rockets.
“I’d like to thank my teammates,” Focht said. “They had my back all year and pushed me to improve.”
Districts are Thursday at Red Hawk Run in Findlay.
