Ocean’s Neil Martin tucked away the winning penalty kick giving the fifth-seeded Spartans the win over fourth-seeded Toms River North, 5-3, on penalties, in a Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinal game. Toms River North’s Sean Graham scored first in regulation, but the Spartans George Karavakas equalized in the 69th minute.

Alexis Wadenson and Tyler Roman also both converted PK’s for the Spartans, setting up the clincher for Martin. Ocean keeper Chris Seager recorded 11 saves for the Spartans, and North’s Brian Brannagan also turned away 11 shots for the Mariners. Ryan Cheslock, Sean Graham, and Sal Turelli all scored their PK’s for the Mariners.

The fifth-seeded Spartans will face top-seeded Manalapan in the SCT semifinals on Thursday at Summerfield stadium in Neptune at 5 p.m.


MANALAPAN 1, COLTS NECK 0: Matt Dizenhaus scored the only goal of the game giving the top-seeded Braves the win over the ninth-seeded Cougars. Dizenhaus scored off an assist from teammate Ryan Hammer in the fourth minute of the game. Ethan Siegel recorded five saves for the Braves and Tice Smit had 11 saves for the Cougars.

RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN 3, WALL 0: Senior Eamon Kitson had a goal and an assist leading the third-seeded Bulldogs past the 11th-seeded Crimson Knights. Kitson assisted the Bulldogs first goal of the game from Mike Slutz in the ninth minute.

The Bulldogs will meet division rival Holmdel in a SCT semifinal game at Summerfield stadium in Neptune at 7 p.m.


0: Kellis Shapiro scored at 33:22 from a pass from Kelly Conway as the No. 7 seed Spartans (13-4-1) edged the No. 10 seed Lions (4-8-3) in a North 2 Group III game. Ocean’s Sara Kraeutler made one save for the shutout and Middletown North’s Gabrielle Tsakivis made 10 saves.

BRICK 6, NOTTINGHAM 0: Courtney Tully had three goals and one assist and Karsyn Lukosius had two goals and one assist as the No. 6 seed Green Dragons (6-12-2) defeated the No. 11 seed Northstars (0-16) in a Central Group III game.

JACKSON LIBERTY 0, HAMILTON WEST 0: The No. 8 seed Lions (8-9-1) defeated the No. 9 seed Hornets 3-0 in penalty strokes after neither team scored in regulation or in two overtimes. Jackson Liberty’s Tatiana Wypych, Morgan Koerber and Tayler Martini successfully converted their penalty strokes and goalie Karlie Baran stopped the one shot she faced in regulation and the overtimes.


WALL 2, DONOVAN 0: Taylor Mitchell’s 16 assists, two kills and three aces led the host Crimson Knights (19-3) past the Griffins (12-9) in non-divisional play.

Jessica Stansfield added three kills, two digs and two blocks. Veronica Portelli contributed six kills and four digs. Rachel Noble added two kills and three blocks. Anna Litowinsky contributed five kills and five blocks. Raquel Rudofsky added five digs.

For Donovan, Paige Laurence notched seven kills and four digs. Jessica Spinili added four kills, four digs and two assists. Ashley Gundling contributed eight digs. Lauren Pace had six kills.

MARLBORO 2, TR SOUTH 1: Haley Unger’s two aces, 10 kills, six digs and three blocks paced the visiting Mustangs (18-6) past the Indians (12-7) in non-divisional action.

Grace Kenningham added two aces, eight kills and six digs. Teresa Dinh contributed two aces, eight digs and 20 assists.

Andrea Eckholt led the Indians with 21 digs and 16 kills. Samantha Allen added six digs and 13 assists. Jennifer Medhaug added three digs and 13 assists. Amanda O’Neill contributed five kills and six digs.

ST. JOHN VIANNEY 2, TR NORTH 1: Anne Manganiello’s seven kills, seven digs and three aces powered the host Lancers (16-4) past the Mariners (12-8) in non-divisional action.

Amanda Caparelli added 12 digs. Emma Heary contributed six kills, two assists and five digs. Victoria Wallace added 29 assists and 10 digs.

For North, Danyelle Morales had 26 digs. Amanda Wrightson blasted home nine kills and added six blocks. Sydney Binkley handed out 21 assists and added two kills. Nicole Zumsteg contributed five kills.

The Lancers won the match with a 25-17 victory in the final game.


Jesse Ryan is the new varsity boys basketball coach at Freehold. Ryan replaced former coach Ben DiBiase, who had an 86-87 record in seven seasons as head coach.
