Ocean upsets Mendham in NJSIAA field hockey

The NJSIAA Field Hockey Tournament continued with quarterfinals competition on Friday and saw a big upset in the North 2 Group III bracket as seventh-seeded Ocean knocked off second-seeded Mendham in overtime by a score of 1-0.

After 60 minutes of regulation time, the Spartans (14-4-1) and Minutemen (13-5-1) remained gridlocked in a scoreless tie thanks to strong play in the cage by Ocean’s senior keeper Sara Kraeutler, who turned away eight shots, and Mendham’s Grace Tino, who stopped seven scoring attempts.

While in the overtime period, Ocean went on the offensive, earning a penalty corner that was converted by junior forward Kelli Shapiro at 66:43.

First Round

RB CATHOLIC 7, GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC 1: Red Bank Catholic’s Regina Burns and Megan Murphy each delivered a pair of goals as the fifth-seeded Caseys (12-6-1) marched past the No. 12 seeded Rams (3-11-1) in this opening-round meeting.

The Caseys’ Alyssa Lubischer scored a goal of her own and assisted on two others by Alyssa Coakley and Caroline Kurowski, while Liza Sidun also distributed two assists.

With the victory Red Bank Catholic moves on to face off with fourth-seeded Camden Catholic on Wednesday.

ST. ROSE 5, HOLY SPIRIT 1: St. Rose’s senior forward Anna Measley and junior defenseman Kristin Dipasqual each scored a goal and assisted on another as the eighth-seeded Purple Roses (9-8-1) upended the No. 9 seeded Spartans in this opening-round match.

Caroline Burs added a pair of second half markers to the Purple Roses winning efforts, while St. Rose’s Chelsey Duffy rounded out the scoring.

St. Rose’s Shannon Gilbert made four saves to preserve the victory and earn a quarterfinals meeting with top-seeded St. Joseph (Hammonton) on Wednesday.

North Jersey 2, Group 2

Quarterfinals

HOLMDEL 4, RARITAN 1: Holmdel’s Keira Yonclas scored a pair of goals while Cassis Fontana and Amanda Jones added two more as the Hornets (9-4-2) flew past the Rockets (8-13) in this quarterfinals matchup.

Holmdel moves on to play second-seeded South Plainfield in the semifinals on Thursday.
