NEW PALTZ — The boys basketball teams from Pine Plains, Arlington, New Paltz and Saugerties high schools picked up victories in the inaugural Officials vs. Cancer event at SUNY New Paltz on Saturday.
“It’s a great event to raise money for a cause that affects so many of us,” said Kevin O’Connor, the president of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Board 114. “Players, coaches, spectators and officials all know someone who has been affected.”
O’Connor said he’d like the event to be held regularly.
“Many of us remember the old Red Fox Shootout that we had for about 15 years and that’s been gone now for a while,” O’Connor said. “This is an opportunity to have local basketball competition on an annual basis. We’d like to see it grow, maybe multiple dates and maybe multiple venues. We’re promoting high school basketball competition and something for people to do on a holiday weekend.”
Two more games are scheduled for SUNY New Paltz today, with Poughkeepsie facing Kingston at 1 p.m. and Our Lady of Lourdes facing Marlboro at 2:45 p.m. Visit http://www.twitter.com/pjstrum for updates throughout both games.
