THE WINNER: Sam Bascom
School: Madeira (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Weight: 155 pounds
Athletic achievement:He scored 27 goals and passed for 31 assists this past season, leading the Mustangs (22-1) to the Division III state quarterfinals. The Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division III Co-Player of the Year and an All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Bascom was the East Team MVP at the High School Soccer All-American Game in Birmingham, Ala., in December. He concluded his prep soccer career with 91 goals and 71 assists.
Academic excellence: Bascom has maintained a 3.58 GPA.
Exemplary character: A Scholar All-America honoree by the NSCAA, he has volunteered locally as a youth soccer coach and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with his church.
“Sam Bascom is the very best player in Ohio, hands down,” said Barnard Baker, head coach of Summit Country Day School (Cincinnati, Ohio). “He is savvy and precise. His speed-of-play and speed-of-thought are two steps ahead of 90 percent of the field. He is a great kid that I hated to coach against but loved to watch.”
THE FUTURE: Bascom will attend the United States Naval Academy.
