THE WINNER: Sandra Yu

THE BASICS

School: Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio)
Grade: Senior
Position: Midfielder
Height: 5-foot-8

Athletic achievement: The state’s 2010-11 Gatorade Player of the Year, Yu led the Warriors to a 22-0-2 record and the Division II state title this past season. Yu scored 16 goals and passed for 20 assists, including a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win over St. Francis DeSales (Toledo, Ohio) in the state final. The 2012 Ohio Soccer Coaches Association Miss Soccer and the Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Year, Yu is a member of the U.S. Soccer Under-18 Women’s National Team pool. She concluded her prep soccer career with 52 goals and 50 assists.

Academic excellence: Yu has maintained a 4.19 unweighted GPA.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally at assisted living facilities, with the Salvation Army and as a youth soccer mentor and coach.

THE PRAISE

“Sandra has all the tools,” said Phil Simone, head coach of Canfield (Ohio). “Her first touch, knowing what she is going to do with the ball before she receives it, speed of play, vision, skill level and pure athleticism put her far and above any player I saw this year.”

THE FUTURE: Yu will attend Notre Dame.
