Athletic achievement: He led the Rams (36-0) to the Class 6A state championship this past season. O’Brien batted .402 with 10 home runs, 38 runs scored, 36 RBI and a .748 slugging percentage. The 2013 Tulsa Metro Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year, he led Owasso in batting average, hits and runs and struck out only nine times in 107 plate appearances.
Academic excellence: O’Brien has maintained a 4.12 GPA.
Exemplary character: A devoted parishioner in his church community, he has volunteered locally at a nursing home, a veterans hospital and on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with the National Honor Society.
“Austin O’Brien is the best player on the best team in Oklahoma,” said Mickey Nichol, head coach at Bixby (Okla.). “I think his statistics and team record speak for themselves. He is a winner and very deserving of any honors that come his way.”
THE FUTURE: O’Brien has verbally committed to Fort Scott Community College.
