Old Bridge's Belmont sets personal best at Meet of Champions

HOLMDEL

Transferring in from Bishop Ahr last winter, you could say time was at a premium for Old Bridge High School senior Rachel Belmont to display her ability to the Knights’ faithful. After all, she’ll be graduating in June.

In her only year with Old Bridge, Belmont set out to not disappoint her new cross-country squad. Getting up before school to put in time for extra runs coupled with 60-mile work weeks in the summer, she saw her hard work pay off throughout the season, taking home Greater Middlesex Conference and Central Jersey Group IV titles.

So when she took to the starting line at Holmdel Park for the NJSIAA girls’ Meet of Champions on Saturday, it was the culmination of her hard work paying off.

Crossing the finish line in a final time of 19:02, good enough for 21st out of the 177 runners who covered the course, Belmont set a personal record.

“I really think all of my hard work paid off,” she said. “I made a lot of goals that I was able to accomplish this season. One of my biggest accomplishments that I’m very happy about was finishing in the 18:30’s at Thompson (Park in Monroe). Being able to win the county title and win sectionals meant a lot to me. My best time (at the MOC) was 22:36 as a freshman. So, it’s nice to see how far I’ve come. I never could’ve imagined being where I’m at.”

In the boys’ race, South Brunswick junior Nicholas Neville finished in 16:17, earning him 32nd place and the title of fastest GMC runner at the MOC.

“The best part of this race is that the atmosphere is absolutely amazing,” Neville said. “I got through the 800 meters and there was a line of people it seemed like for a mile. Everybody is cheering ‘go, go, go.’ It felt amazing. I did my best to finish as fast as I could and is feels really great.”

Neville, who set the school record last week in 16:22, broke it with room to spare. Fellow GMC standout Trent Brinkofski of Bishop Ahr finished 36th with a final time of 16:21.
