O'Leary steps down at Lincoln

Due to a change in his career commitments outside of coaching, current Manitowoc Lincoln girls basketball coach Ryan O’Leary is stepping down.

O’Leary was hired last March, but due to an opportunity in his business career he has had to suddenly step aside.

“Although we are disappointed to see Coach O’Leary go, I am extremely confident and excited about the girls basketball staff we still have in place,” said athletic director John Johnson.

Kate Deiters, who was slated to fill the position as JV girls basketball coach, has been named varsity basketball coach. Julia Hirssig will remain on board as the varsity assistant coach and Heather Rupp will coach the freshman team.

Deiters is a 2001 Graduate of De Pere High School and a 2005 Graduate of the University of Arizona. In her four years at Arizona, Deiters served as a team manager and student assistant coach with the Wildcat women’s basketball team. She was part of an Arizona program that earned three straight bids to the NCAA Tournament from 2002-05.

Deiters has spent seven years coaching basketball at the AAU level and has gained notoriety for her ability to work with perimeter players.

The Ships start practice on Nov. 18 and play their first game on at home against Two Rivers on Nov. 30.
