Athletic achievement: He led the Cavaliers to a 25-3 record and a berth in the Class 6A state quarterfinals against Thurston (Springfield, Ore.), scheduled for May 24. Kelly owned an 8-1 record with a 1.46 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 48.0 innings-pitched entering the postseason round of eight. Kelly batted .408 with three home runs, six stolen bases, 10 doubles, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored through 28 games. A returning Class 6A First Team All-State selection as named by The Oregonian, he recorded a .505 on-base percentage and a .684 slugging percentage.
Academic excellence: Kelly has maintained a 3.00 GPA.
Exemplary character: In addition to donating his time as a youth baseball instructor, he has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, Feed the Hungry, the Oregon Zoo and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
“He is a great baseball player,” said J.J. Stolsig, head coach of rival Canby (Ore.). “He is dominant on the mound, at the plate and in the field. He makes everyone around him better. Character-wise, he is a great kid. You can tell he really enjoys the game. He plays the right way — hustles on and off the field.”
THE FUTURE: Kelly has signed with Portland.
