THE WINNER: Ashlee Schulz
School: Thurston (Springfield, Ore.)
Athletic achievement: She led the Colts to a 17-0-1 record and the Class 6A state title this past season. Schulz scored six goals, passed for six assists and anchored a defense that allowed only six goals and recorded 14 shutouts, including three shutouts in four postseason games. The Oregonian’s Class 6A Player of the Year, Schulz is a member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Olympic Development Program team. She concluded her prep soccer career with 18 goals and 18 assists.
Academic excellence: Schulz has maintained a 3.70 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally with the Eugene Police Department, as a youth soccer coach and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with the Thurston High National Honor Society.
“Ashlee was one of the toughest players we played against all year,” said Tim Copeland, head coach of Grant (Portland, Ore.). “She is a very physical defender and was great in the air. We had three Division I players who played forward for us this year, and Ashlee really shut down all of them the two times we played.”
THE FUTURE: Schulz will attend Oregon.
