Oshkosh North’s Brandon Hamm put on a dominating performance in his lone match at the WIAA Division 1 Neenah sub-sectional on Tuesday.
The sophomore blistered Sheboygan South’s Austin Davis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to advance to sectionals, but was the lone Oshkosh flight to earn a spot in Thursday’s sectional field.
Hamm’s win was the only victory on the day for North, while Oshkosh West posted plenty of wins, but could push any players or doubles teams through to sectionals.
The Spartans No. 1 doubles team lost a gut-wrenching three-setter in its lone match of the day.
Aron Kumbalek and Cade Francour won the first set over Fond du Lac Stuart Nett and Matt Riley, but dropped the next to in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 loss.
North’s No. 2 singles player Vince Clune also lost a three-set match to Manitowoc Lincoln’s Derek Rohrer after winning the first set. Clune lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The Wildcats got one win from five different flights, with every one but the two No. 1 flights picking up victories.
Alex Boettcher pounded Octavio Arredondo 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the Wildcats, but lost 7-6, 6-2 to Fond du Lac’s Kenan Saleh in the second round.
Zeeshan Sabih topped North’s Cameron Buelow 7-5, 6-4 in a close No. 3 singles match, but Sabih was then ousted by Ethan Pieper of Fond du Lac 6-2, 6-0.
Danny Colantonio beat North’s Logan Withers 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles and then won the first set of his next match, only to drop the next two in a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 loss to Fond du Lac’s Matt Schneider.
Both of West’s doubles teams — Chris Lightner and Ben Rogers at No. 2, and Adam Hawley and Casey Nelson at No. 3 — won tight first-set matches, only to lose in the second round.
