Oshkosh West falls to Appleton North

At one point in each set, Oshkosh West held a lead against Appleton North. The Wildcats, however, couldn’t string enough points together over the course of the match to keep up with the Lightning as they were swept at home Tuesday night 25-20, 25-14, 25-21.

“I felt like we did some really good things and we just weren’t able to string it together,” coach Gillian Pakula said. “but we just had too many errors in a row and the game got away from us.”

Anna Kaminski led the Wildcats with nine kills and Hailey Hendrix added eight kills to pace the attack, and Danielle Dillman had a team-high 19 digs. She currently leads the Fox Valley Association in that category.

“We kept up our intensity the whole game and we fought back, but it just wasn’t in our favor tonight,” Dillman said.

The Wildcats jumped out to an 8-5 advantage early in the first set, but Appleton North quickly rattled off six points in a row to grab the lead.

West would answer shortly after with a four-point run of its own, reclaiming the lead at 14-13. Appleton North’s hitters got going after that, though, and the Lightning took control to take home the opening set.

Again the Wildcats led early in the second set, grabbing a 7-6 lead before Appleton North (20-12, 5-2 FVA) rattled off 18 of the next 23 points and cruised to the 25-14 win.

“You know, it’s going to go point to point, and that’s the fight that you have, to find the three-point runs to go together,” Pakula said. “Unfortunately, we would fight and go ahead and then they would go on a five-point run and we wouldn’t get that back.”

Oshkosh West scored the first five points of the third set and remained in the lead until a small spurt helped the Lightning grab a 16-14 advantage. The Wildcats would bounce back, re-tying the match three more times, including the last time at 20-all. Again, however, the Lightning would seize control at the end and claimed the third set to get the sweep.

“We just need to improve on our defense and staying up and being more positive and working better as a team and we’ll be okay,” Dillman said.

Appleton North def. Oshkosh West 25-20, 25-14, 25-21.
