Otters stay alive with victory

By

ST. GEORGE, Utah

Sophomore Jeff Owen pitched the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team to its first-ever NCAA tournament victory, an 8-1 win Friday over Cal State L.A. in an elimination game.

The Otters (39-16) play another elimination game Saturday against either Sonoma State or Grand Canyon.

Behind a three-hit performance, Owen notched his 12th victory with the first nine-inning complete game of his career.

He struck out six, leaving him just two short of becoming the first Otter to reach 100 strikeouts.

Senior Dave Garcia went 3-for-5 with a double and homer and five RBIs while Ronnie Fhurong of Hollister had three hits and scored twice.
